Marche Guide
ITALY / Marche / ANCONA

The Marche are situated in the central-eastern area of the Italian peninsula and extend in the territory for 9694 Km. The region is delimited by the Appennines to the West and to the East by the Adriatic Sea, that washes the coast. Moreover, the Marche border to North-West with Emilia Romagna and the Republic of San Marino, to the West with Tuscany and Umbria and to the South with Lazio and Abruzzo.

The region offers a varied and rich territory from the cultural and naturalistic points of view. Along the coasts you can find numerous seaside resorts: the popular beaches of Gabicce Mare, the Conero promontory (South of Ancona), that is characterized by a charming landscape with many bays and coves. The coast road of the Marches ends where the sand coast of San Benedetto del Tronto begins, which marks the border with Abruzzo. Moreover, the whole territory of the Marche is extremely interesting not only from the touristic point of view, but also scientifically, because of its geologic structure and the presence of peculiar karst phenomena. The Frasassi Grottoes are a beautiful and meaningful example, near the abbey in San Vittore delle Chiuse, with their Grotta del Vento (the Wind Grotto), which is 120 mt high and all the charming galleries that wind in the subsurface.
